1AND God said to Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel, and live there; and build there an altar to God, who appeared to you when you fled from the presence of your brother Esau.
2Then Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and cleanse yourselves, and change your garments;
3And let us arise and go up to Bethel; and I will build there an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the journey that I took.
4So they gave to Jacob all the strange gods that were in their possession, and the earrings that were in their ears; and Jacob buried them under the oak which was by Shechem.
5And they journeyed; and the fear of God fell on the towns that were around them, and they did not pursue after Jacob and his sons.
6So Jacob came to Luz, that is Bethel, which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people that were with him. 7And he built there an altar, and called the place Bethel, because there God appeared to him when he fled from the presence of his brother Esau. 8Then Deborah Rebekah's nurse died, and she was buried below Bethel under an oak; so the name of the oak was called the Oak of Weeping.
9And God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Padanaram, and blessed him. 10And God said to him, Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel will be your name; so he called his name Israel. 11And God said to him, I am God Almighty; be fruitful and multiply. A people and a multitude of peoples will come from you, and kings will come out of your loins; 12And the land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give to you, and to your descendants after you I will give the land. 13And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him. 14And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he had talked with him, a pillar of stone, and he poured out a drink offering on it, and he poured oil on it. 15And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, Bethel.
16And they journeyed from Bethel, and continued until they came within the distance of a mile from the entrance to Ephrath; and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labor while she was being delivered. 17And it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, the midwife said to her, Do not fear; for this one is also a son for you. 18And it came to pass, as her soul was departing and she was dying, she called the child's name the Son of My Sorrow; but his father called him Benjamin. 19And Rachel died, and was buried on the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem. 20And Jacob set up a pillar on the grave of Rachel; that is the pillar of Rachel's grave to this day.
21And Israel journeyed, and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Gadar. 22And it came to pass, when Israel lived in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, his father's concubine; and Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were 12: 23The sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. 24And the sons of Rachel: Joseph, and Benjamin. 25And the sons of Bilhah, Rachel's maid: Dan, and Naphtali. 26And the sons of Zilpah, Leah's maid: Gad, and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob that were born to him in Padanaram.
27And Jacob came to his father Isaac to Mamre, to Koriath Gabarey, which is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac had resided temporarily. 28And the days of Isaac were 180 years. 29Then Isaac grew weak and died; and he was gathered to his people, being very old and full of days; and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him in the burial ground which his father Abraham had purchased.
